The 4th of July is a favorite holiday for many. Spending time with friends and family, relaxing, BBQ-ing, and soaking up the sun are favorite activities, especially here in Truckee and Lake Tahoe. While this holiday has all of the makings of a great time, an unexpected trip to the dentist could spoil your fun. Here are a few tips to help you avoid an emergency trip to the dentist over Independence Day:
Don’t open bottles or packages with your teeth.
While this might seem like a simple rule, you would be surprised by the number of BBQ-related dental accidents that occur each year due to people opening bottles, bags, and other packages with their teeth. Do your teeth a favor and use a bottle opener or some scissors. Your teeth will thank you for it!
There’s no getting around the fact that many people enjoy drinking soda, beer, juice and wine over the 4th of July holiday. What many people don’t realize is that all of these drinks can wreak havoc on your oral health. Go ahead and enjoy your favorite beverage, but make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Drinking water helps to stimulate saliva production and washes away sugars and bacteria.
Stay away from hard foods and candies.
Chewing on hard foods and candies is a great way to break a tooth. Even chewing on ice cubes, a popular way to cool yourself off when it’s really hot outside, has the potential to chip your teeth. Stick to the soft foods.
Brush and Floss.
When your day is done, remember to brush and floss thoroughly before heading to bed. Brushing and flossing is the single most important thing you can do for your oral health.
We hope you have a great 4th of July holiday. Hopefully these simple tips will keep your teeth looking and feeling great.
