The world is constantly changing, all the way from cellular to multi-cellular change. Part of this change is also seen in the human body where previously “used” organs and body parts are no longer considered essential to healthy body function. Called “vestigial organs,” some of these body parts are now removed or altered. One of the most common body parts removed are wisdom teeth.
Though thought to have helped our ancestors, modern hygiene and smaller jaw bones make it uncomfortable – and unwise – to keep your wisdom teeth. That is when the help of an oral surgeon comes in handy.
So what are the other non-essential body parts? Here are a few:
- Plica semilunaris (third eyelid)
- Male nipples
- Coccyx (tailbone)
- Darwin’s point (tiny fold on the top of each ear found in 10% of humans)
- Body hair (besides eyebrows and eyelashes)
